If you have done much research you probably have found some discounted wedding gown preservation services. Sometimes it's a local dry-cleaner offering a gown cleaning special. Maybe you saw an ad in a magazine or on the internet for $69 or $99.
Look out! Read the fine print! Almost always these low priced specials are not actually for gown preservation, they are for the box only. They call it a wedding gown preservation box BUT you're the one responsible for cleaning your dress yourself and then you can use this "special" box to it in.
These special prices can also be for a "do it yourself" cleaning kit. The kit will include the storage box, some acid free tissue or muslin to wrap the wedding dress in, maybe even a home dry cleaning packet like "Dryel" to use in your home dryer.
You'll find many of these special priced do it yourself cleaning and or storage boxes on eBay. They look similar to real preservation kits, but aren't.
Make sure you're comparing "apples for apples", you'll find that real wedding gown preservation kits contains everything you need to take care of your wedding gown. You send your gown to the company to be hand inspected by specially trained technicians. They will pay special attention to the hem and top of the bodice areas, cleaning them by hand.
Spot cleaning is done for all stains. And they will use a special "anti-sugar" treatment for your gown. This treatment removes the residues from wine, soda, cake and food that may be on your dress. These spots will yellow quickly if not properly treated.
Your local dry-cleaner cannot do this. Their service and quality is limited.
You'll notice that professional wedding dress preservation can cost as much as $490, but usually averages between $189 - $249. Be careful and not over pay to have your dress preserved. Many online websites offer exactly the same service at various prices. Check it out carefully - no sense paying more for the same service.
Shop and compare. All professional wedding gown preservation companies
use the same procedures. Compare, talk with someone at the companies
if you have any questions. If you are going to have your wedding
dress professionally steamed/pressed check before hand to see
what they will charge. Sometimes your local dry cleaner will charge
nearly as much for steaming and pressing as they do for their whole
service. (see the article onlocal dry cleaning
compared to professional Wedding
Gown Preservation).
To actually save money, time and stress you should consider having your
wedding gownprofessionally cleaned and preserved.
Several companies provide a complete kit to make it easy for you. The wedding gown preservation kit will contain everything you need. It will contain a shipping bag and box, a customer invoice, sealing tape and complete instructions. You'll need to place your dress in the plastic bag, the invoice in the bag, the dress/invoice/bag into the box. Seal up the box with the sealing tape provided and place the pre-paid shipping label on the box. Everything is pre-paid so all you need to do is take the completed package to any UPS/Fed Ex. Store.
Your dress will be shipped to you (no extra cost) to any address in the US (whatever address you have placed on the invoice).
